Nach Angaben der indonesischen Regierung plant CATL eine 5 Milliarden Dollar Investition in ein Batteriewerk in Indonesien. Das Lithium-Ionen-Batteriewerk soll im Jahr 2024 die Produktion aufnehmen. Die Investition steht im Zusammenhang damit, dass CATL Nickel aus Indonesien beziehen will, der indonesische Staat jedoch darauf besteht, dass 60% des geförderten Nickels auch im Land zu Batterien verarbeitet wird.

Aus der Regierungsstelle heißt es im Wortlaut: „Wir wollen nicht, dass sie unser Nickel erhalten und es im Ausland verarbeiten.“ Indonesien verfügt über reiche Nickelvorkommen im Land. Nickel wiederum ist ein metallisches Element, dass in der Batteriezellproduktion immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnt. Das liegt zum einem daran, dass immer mehr Batteriezellen produziert werden und zum anderen das in den Batteriezellen die Zellchemie eine Entwicklung hin zu hohen Nickelanteilen nimmt.

Nach den Informationen der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters ist das Interesse am indonesischen Nickel nicht auf CATL beschränkt. Auch LG Chem und Tesla standen bereits im Kontakt mit den offiziellen Stellen des Landes.
