Ein neuer Name erscheint auf der deutschen Batteriezellproduzentenkarte. Mit SVOLT plant neben CATL und Farasis ein weiterer chinesischer Batteriezellhersteller ein Werk in Deutschland. 24 GWh Batteriespeicherkapazität pro Jahr sollen in der finalen Ausbaustufe im saarländischem Überherrn produziert werden und die Produktion bereits 2023 starten. Neben Batteriezellen will SVOLT auch Batteriemodule und -packs vor Ort produzieren.

Bis zu zwei Milliarden Euro will das chinesische Batterieunternehmen dafür in die Standorte Überherrn und Heusweiler investieren. In Überherrn werden die Zellen produziert und in Heusweiler, das nur rund 30 km entfernt ist, sollen Module und Packs entstehen, die einbaufertig an diverse Autobauer geliefert werden könnten.

Ortansässiger Partner für das Großprojekt sind das Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit, Energie und Verkehr (MWAEV) des Saarlandes und die Strukturholding Saar GmbH (SHS). Insbesondere das Ministerium sei aktiv auf SVOLT zugegangen, um die Ansiedlung vor Ort zu unterstützen und zeigte sich sehr erfreut, über die getroffene Standortentscheidung.

SVOLT selbst plant den weiteren Aufbau von Kapazitäten im Bereich der Batteriefertigung. Bis zum Jahr 2025 will das Unternehmen weltweit schon 100 GWh an Energiespeicherkapazität pro Jahr ausliefern. Dazu sind neben dem Werk in Deutschland auch drei Werke in Asien-Pazifik in Planung, die zusammen eine Leistung von 76 GWh pro Jahr liefern sollen.
