Auf dem vergangenen Battery-Day hatte Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, neben verschiedenen Neurungen im Bereich der Optimierung der Batterietechnik auch neue Batteriezellen vorgestellt. 4680-Rundzellen sollen das neuen Standardformat von Tesla werden und als solches in kommenden Fahrzeugen direkt in den Fahrzeugrahmen integriert werden. Nun wurde bekannt, dass die Technologie schon in Grünheide anlaufen soll.
Dabei sollen die neuen Zellen künftig dazu beitragen, dass die Elektroautos von Tesla, in Zusammenspiel mit anderen Optimierungen der Fertigung, zu kostengünstigen und leistungsverbesserten Elektroautos hinführen. Dazu plant Tesla die stabilen Zell-Zylinder als Teil einer Sandwich-Struktur zu verwenden, die ähnlich zu den mit Kerosin befüllten Tragflächen eines Flugzeugs selbst ein Element des Fahrzeug-Rahmens darstellen sollen, Module und Packs somit obsolet machen. Es gäbe so nur große Heck- und Front-Teile, welche mit dem Akku-Sandwich in der Mitte zur fertigen Struktur verbunden werden.
Konkret sagt Musk aktuell hierzu auf Twitter: „Berlin wird 4680-Zellen mit strukturellem Batterie-Paket und Einzel-Gussteilen vorne und hinten verwenden“ und ergänzt das „eine Menge neue Technologie in Berlin umgesetzt werden sollen, was zu einem gewissen Produktionsrisiko führen wird. Wenn die Technologie etabliert ist, werden Fremont & Shanghai diese Transformation in zwei Jahren durchlaufen.“
