Bis zum Sommer 2019 war Jeffrey Brian Straubel CTO (Chief Technical Officer) bei Tesla. Sein Abgang aus dem Unternehmen war einer der prominentesten, in dem oftmals als hart und leistungsorientiert beschriebenen Teslaumfeld. Nun erscheint der ehemaliger Teslamanager mit einem neuen Plan auf der Bildfläche. Eine umgekehrte Gigafactory zum Recycling von Elektroautos und vor allem deren Batterien soll entstehen.
Straubel, der für das Vorhaben das Start-Up Redwood Materials gegründet hat, gab zu seinem neuen Vorhaben ein exklusives Interview im Wall Street Journal und erklärte dort seine Pläne. Straubels Fokus liegt vor allem auf den wertvollen Batteriematerialien und deren immenser Bedeutung für die Gesamtkosten der Batterie und die des gesamten Elektrofahrzeugs. Darum sei es das Ziel insbesondere die Rohstoffe Nickel, Kobalt und Lithium durch ein effektives Recycling wiederzugewinnen. (Nickel, Kobalt und Lithium sind die Grundbausteile des Aktivmaterials einer NMC-Batteriezellkathode und definieren den in verschiedenen Zusammensetzungen, vor allem mit hohem Nickelanteil, produzierten Stand der Batteriezelltechnik, insbesondere für leistungsoptimierte Anwendungen, z.B. Elektroautos).
Mit einem, durch den ehemaligen Teslamanager im Rahmen dessen vorgestellten Anteil von 50-75% von Rohstoffkosten an der Gesamtheit der Herstellungskosten einer Batterie, geht Straubel von einer deutlichen „Veränderung der Gesamtgleichung“ aus, sollte es gelingen ein effektives Recycling der heute auf dem Markt befindlichen Batteriesysteme umzusetzen.
Straubels Vision überzeugte bereits namenhafte Investoren wie Bill Gates und Jeff Bezos, unklar ist jedoch in weit auch Tesla bzw. Elon Musk Partner des Unternehmens werden oder sind. Zweifellos kann der Vorstoß von Straubel auch für Tesla, zur Schaffung eines gesamtheitlichen Kreislaufprozesses in Bezug auf die eigenen Elektrofahrzeuge äußerst interessant sein. Staubel selbst ist heute, neben seiner Tätigkeit für Redwood Materials, immer noch Berater von Tesla und Musk.
