Internationales Renommee hat der schwäbische Batteriehersteller Varta heute schon für seine hoch spezialisierten Knopfzellen für Hörgeräte und Kopfhörer. Diese sind technologisch so gut, dass sogar ein kostenfokussiertes Unternehmen wie Apple sie in seinen AirPods nutzt. Nun bestätigt Varta, dass das Unternehmen auch im Bereich der Elektroautobatterien aktiv werden möchte.
In einem Interview, dass Herbert Schein, Varta CEO, dem Tagesspiegel gab, sagte dieser: „Wir wollen auch Batteriezellen für Elektroautos bauen“ und ergänzt „Für die nächste Generation der E-Mobilität sind Ladezeit, hohe Leistung, hohe Energie und Langlebigkeit der Batterie die limitierenden Faktoren. […]. Die Technologie, die wir heute entwickeln, könnte auch bei Anwendungen im Bereich der Elektromobilität Vorteile bieten. Wir freuen uns, wenn wir im Bereich Automotive eine Rolle spielen dürfen.“ Und fügt weiter an, dass Varta für Partnerschaften mit Automobilproduzenten offen wäre. Gewollt ist dieser Schritt auch von der Politik. 300 Millionen Euro hat Varta vor allem deswegen erhalten, um leistungsfähige, nachhaltige und großformatige Batteriezellen und -module zu entwickeln.
Trotz Förderung und Kompetenzen im Bereich hoch entwickelter Knopfzellen, ist die Herausforderung für Varta jedoch immense. Kaum ein deutscher oder europäischer Batteriehersteller agiert aktuell auf einem Niveau, welches mit dem aus fern Ost (LG Chem, CATL oder Sk Innovation) vergleichbar wäre. Das wiederum führt dazu, dass nicht nur OEMs sondern auch viele namenhafte mittelständige Unternehmen sich nach Möglichkeit mit der bewährten Technik aus Asien eindecken. Interessant zu beobachten wird es daher sein, in wieweit es Varta gelingen wird die entsprechenden Aufträge im Elektrofahrzeugbereich zu generieren.
