Die BMW Group hat einen Versorgungsvertrag mit der Managem Group unterzeichnet. Der neue Vertrag soll die Lieferung von nachhaltigem Kobalt für BMWs Elektrofahrzeuge sicherstellen. Das Kobalt, dass BMW in einem Zeitraum von 2020 – 2025 beziehen möchte, soll zu 80% aus Minen in Australien stammen und damit nachhaltiger und ethnisch verträglicher bezogen werden.
„Kobalt ist ein wichtiger Rohstoff für die Elektromobilität. […] Mit der Unterzeichnung des heutigen Liefervertrags mit Managem sichern wir unseren Rohstoffbedarf für Batteriezellen weiter ab“, sagt Andreas Wendt, Vorstand der BMW AG für Einkauf und Lieferantennetzwerk. Mit dem 100 Millionen Euro teuren Vertragsabschluss deckt die BMW Group rund ein Fünftel des Kobalt-Bedarfs für die fünfte Generation ihrer elektrischen Antriebe ab.
Der neue Liefervertrag ist für BMW somit ein zentraler Baustein der elektrischen Zukunft des Unternehmens, da der Konzern das Ziel verfolgt bereits bis zum Jahr 2023 25 Elektromodelle anzubieten. Mehr als die Hälfte der Fahrzeugmodelle sollen vollelektrisch sein. Aktuell rechnen die Münchner bis zur Mitte des Jahrzehntes mit mehr als einer Verdreifachung des heutigem Jahresbedarf an Kobalt.
Besonders wichtig sei es BMW jedoch die Versorgung nachhaltig zu gestalten: „Für uns beginnt eine ethisch verantwortliche Rohstoffgewinnung und -verarbeitung ganz am Anfang der Wertschöpfungskette: Wir beschäftigen uns intensiv mit den Lieferketten für Batteriezellen – bis in die Rohstoffminen hinein“, sagt Ralf Hattler, Bereichsleiter für Einkauf Indirekte Güter und Leistungen, Rohstoffe, Produktionspartner bei der BMW AG. Dazu forscht BMW selbst zur Wertschöpfungskette der Batteriezelltechnologie. Themen der nachhaltigen und ethisch korrekten Versorgung untersucht der Konzern seit 2019 im eigenen „Kompetenzzentrum Batteriezelle“ in München.
