Nach aktuellen, noch unbestätigten, Berichten der südkoreanischen Medien, will LG Chem schon zum Jahr 2021 seine neue und hoch energiedichte NCMA Batterietechnologie, bestehend aus einer Nickel, Kobalt, Mangan und Aluminium Kathode auf den Markt bringen. Ursprünglich war der Plan, dass die Technologie erst 2022 zur Verfügung steht.

Die Zellen werden von LG Chem in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Partner GM im Joint Venture Ultium Cells LLC in Lordstown, Ohio, produziert werden. Da sich die Fertigung hier jedoch noch im Aufbau befindet, wird es eine Übergangsphase geben, in der die Batteriezellen wohl in einem bestehenden LG Chem Werk in Michigan produziert werden. Die neuartigen Zellen sollen danach erst einmal exklusiv für elektrische GM Modelle und GM Tochterunternehmen sowie für Honda vorgesehen sein.

Technisch gesehen zeichnet sich der neue Kathodenstandard von LG Chem dadurch aus, dass dieser mit 70% weniger Kobalt auskommt, was vor allem am Einsatz von Aluminium in der Kathodenzusammensetzung liegt. Dazu kommt ein deutlicher Anstieg der Energiedichte, welcher es möglich macht, dass Batteriepacks in aktuell üblicher Größe durch den Einsatz der NCMA-Technologie eine Speicherkapazität von um die 200 KWh erreichen können. Ein Fakt, der insbesondere der oftmals erheblich erhöhten Fahrzeuggröße des US-Automobilmarktes entgegenkommt und nötige Reichweiten garantiert.

Auch in preislicher Hinsicht soll die neu entwickelte Technologie mit der bekannten Li-Ionen Technik konkurrieren können. Die in Serie hergestellten Batteriepacks liegen mit erwarteten Kosten von 100 $/kWh nur geringfügig über den Herstellungspreis aktuell üblicher Lithium-Ionen-Batterien.
