Wie unlängst in einem Bericht der United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) bekanntgegeben wurde, wird der Bedarf an den bereits kritischen Elementen der Batteriezellfertigung in den nächsten Jahren weiter zunehmen. Gleichzeitig soll die Bedeutung fossiler Energieträger weiter erheblich abnehmen, während sich der UNCTAD in seiner Analyse auch auf den aktuell zu beobachtenden Preisverfall am Rohölmarkt beruft.

In seinem Report „Commodities at a glance: Special issue on strategic battery raw materials“, stellt der UNCTAD insbesondere die Bedeutung des rapiden Anstieges des Elektromobilitätsmarktes für die Ressourcenkritikalität von Rohstoffen zur Herstellung von Batterien heraus. Durch die weltweiten Bestrebungen Treibhausgase zu reduzieren wird davon ausgegangen, dass die nachhaltige Mobilität auf diesen Wege weiter weltweit fokussiert wird. Insgesamt und seit einigen Jahren bereits konstant stehen hierfür die weltweiten Investitionen in Nachhaltigkeitsprojekte bei in etwa 600 Milliarden US-Dollar.

Auf Batterien für Elektrofahrzeuge wird, nach dem Bericht des UNCTAD, in den nächsten Jahren eine bedeutende Rolle entfallen. Zentrale Entwicklungsherausforderung für zukünftige Batterien sei es, dass diese in einer nachhaltigen Art & Weise produziert werden und auf einfach verfügbaren, unkritischen Ressourcen basieren. “Alternative sources of energy such as electric batteries will become even more important as investors grow more wary of the future of the oil industry“ ergänzt UNCTAD Direktorin Pamela Coke-Hamilton.

Allein in Betrachtung des Gesamtmarktes für Kathodenmaterial von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, welches heute mit Elementen wie Lithium, Mangan und Kobalt, die kritischste und ebenso wichtigste Komponente der Lithium-Ionen-Batterie ausmacht, wird erwartet, dass der Markt von 7 Milliarden Dollar in Jahr 2018 auf bis zu 58,8 Milliarden Dollar im Jahr 2024 anwachsen wird.
