Während CATL wohl künftig kobaltfreie LFP-Batterien an Tesla liefern wird und damit ein Problem der Rohstoffversorgung von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien aktueller Bauart löst, bleibt die Versorgung heutiger Batterien mit Lithium weiterhin eine Herausforderung. Mehrere Unternehmen wollen nun Deutschland zum nächsten Lithium Rohstoffproduzenten machen und den heimischen Batteriezellenfertigungsmarkt mit dem wertvollen Rohstoff beliefern.
Entstehen soll der Lithiumabbau zum Beispiel nördlich von Karlsruhe über eine bereits bestehende Geothermieanlage. Hier plant der baden-württembergischen Energiekonzern EnBW die Nachrüstung einer Lithium-Chlorid Extraktionsanlage, die nach Aussage von Projektleiter Thomas Köbel „im Labor recht ordentlich funktioniert hat“.
Eine weitere Anlage plant die Firma Vulcan Energy in Kooperation mit den Pfalzwerken in einem vergleichbaren Vorhaben in Insheim, Rheinland-Pfalz. Auch hier soll ein bestehendes Geothermiekraftwerk so umgerüstet werden, dass, im Gegensatz zum vorhergegangenen Projekt, Lithiumhydroxid direkt als wertvoller Rohstoff aus dem vorhandenen Thermalquellen über Filteranlagen gewonnen werden kann. Schon im Jahr 2021 sollen hier mehrere Tonnen Lithiumhydroxid gefördert werden.
In wie weit die Gewinnung von Lithium in Deutschland und Europa heutigen primären Lithiumabbauländern wie Chile, Argentinien und Australien in Zukunft Marktanteile abnehmen kann, zeigt sich aktuell noch sehr offen. Nichtsdestoweniger werden die europäischen Pläne zur Lithium Gewinnung bereits heute vom Europäischen Institut für Innovation und Technologie (EIT) und konkret über dessen Investitionstochtergesellschaft Inno Energy mit einer sechsstelligen Summe unterstützt. Christian Müller, Deutschland-Chef von Inno Energy, beschreibt die Entwicklungsperspektive dabei im „Spiegel“-Interview wie folgt: „Durch dieses sowie die drei weiteren existierenden europäischen Projekte zum Lithiumabbau könnte Europa bis 2025 rund 80 Prozent seines Bedarfs aus eigenen Quellen abdecken“.
