Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) und Panasonic Corporation (Panasonic) haben angekündigt, künftig in Form des Joint Ventures Prime Planet Energy & Solutions zusammenarbeiten zu wollen. Das neue Unternehmen soll sich insbesondere auf die Herstellung prismatischer Zellen für den Automobilsektor fokussieren. Die beiden Unternehmen setzen hiermit ihre bereits Anfang 2019 beschlossene Zusammenarbeit um und präsentierten im Februar erstmalig die genauere Ausgestaltung. Am 01. April wird das neue Unternehmen den Betrieb aufnehmen und initial ca. 5100 Angestellte beschäftigen. Toyota hält 51% des Unternehmens. Neben der Produktion für alle Markteilnehmer sollen neue Batterien entwickelt werden.

Beide Unternehmen starteten ihre Zusammenarbeit im Jahr 1953 und verkündeten im Jahre 2017 eine Machbarkeitsstudie für ein gemeinsames Zellherstellungsunternehmen. Panasonic beliefert Toyota bereits mit Zellen und Batteriesystemen. Gerüchte berichten über einen Beitritt weiterer Unternehmen und die Schaffung eines neuen Großunternehmens.

Im November vergangenen Jahres wurde beispielsweise die Kooperation zwischen BYD und Toyota für die Entwicklung von elektrisch angetriebenen Fahrzeugen verkündet. Das Joint-Venture soll ebenfalls im Jahre 2020 seinen Betrieb offiziell aufnehmen.
