Ebenso wie aus verschiedenen anderen industriellen Bereichen bereits bekannt, soll nun auch ein Gütesiegel für fair produzierte Traktionsbatterien entstehen.
Hierfür arbeitet die Global Battery Alliance aktuell die relevanten Kriterien aus, die zukünftig auf eine fair hergestellte Batterie hinweisen sollen. Zur Global Battery Alliance genannten Vereinigung gehören unter anderem Firmen wie BASF, BMW, Google, Microsoft, SK Innovation, Umicore und die Eurasian Resources Group. Benedikt Sobotka, Chef des in Luxemburg beheimateten und in der Aufzählung letztgenannten Unternehmens Eurasian Resources Group sagt hierzu: „Die Nachfrage nach Energiespeicherung wird in den nächsten zehn Jahren um den Faktor 20 wachsen. Wir müssen sicherstellen, dass dieses explosive Wachstum nachhaltig, sozial verantwortlich und klimaschonend geschieht. Und wir müssen sofort die grassierende Kinderarbeit beenden.“ Dies sei das wichtigste Ziel der Global Battery Alliance.
Heute ist die Produktionskette von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, wie angesprochen, oft noch wenig nachhaltig und verletzt zudem, vor allem in der Gewinnung der Basis-Ressourcen der Batterieherstellung, immer wieder ethische Grundsätze. Im Fokus steht zum Beispiel das für Lithium-Ionen-Batterien zwingend benötigte Kobalt, dass unter anderem im politisch instabilen Kongo gewonnen wird. Insbesondere hier soll das Gütesiegel gegen immer wieder auftretende Kinderarbeit bei der Kobaltgewinnung wirken, während es ebenso abbaubedingte Umweltschäden in den betreffenden Regionen verhindern soll.
