Die Bahnstrecke Leipzig – Chemnitz wird in kommenden Jahren mit batterieelektrischen Zügen des Herstellers Alstrom abgedeckt. Das Auftragsvolumen zur Fertigung, Lieferung und Wartung für 11 Züge des Modells „Coradia Continental“ beträgt insgesamt 100 Millionen Euro.

Für Alstrom ist es der erste Auftrag für einen Batterieelektrischen Regionalzug in Deutschland. Zuvor hatte das Unternehmen bereits mit einem Wasserstoff betriebenen Regionalzug auf sich aufmerksam gemacht. Die zwei Prototypen, welche der Modellreihe „Coradia iLint“ angehören, sind im Juli 2019 vom Eisenbahn-Bundesamt zugelassen worden und fahren nun die Strecke Cuxhaven-Bremerhaven und Bremervörde-Buxtehude. Diese Züge, welche ebenfalls Batterien auf dem Dach als Zwischenspeicher besitzen, haben eine Reichweite von 800 km. Mithalten können die batterieelektrischen Züge mit einer Reichweite von ca. 120 km dabei nicht. Dennoch soll „der Fahrleitungsbetrieb der Strecke Chemnitz-Leipzig ohne Leistungseinbußen und Komforteinbußen gewährleistet sein.“ Die genaue Batteriekapazität der Züge ist nicht bekannt. Ein Ladezyklus soll in dem Leipziger und Chemnitzer Bahnhof jeweils innerhalb einer halben Stunde möglich sein. Das Laden der Batterie ist auch während der 81 km langen Fahrt über Oberspannungsleitungen möglich. Somit können die Züge auch weiterhin auf der Strecke genutzt werden, falls diese mit Oberspannungsleitungen ausgebaut werden sollte.
Die Auslieferung der Züge ist ab 2023 geplant. VMS (Verkehrsbund Mittelsachsen) Geschäftsführer Dr. H. Neuhaus ist froh, dass die Anschaffung vom Verband ZVNL (Zweckverband für den Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig) genehmigt wurde denn sie macht die Verbindung „deutlich schneller, komfortabler und umweltfreundlicher!“
