Im südwestfranzösischen Nersac bei Angoulême brachten der französische Staatspräsident Emmanuel Macron und Bundesforschungsministerin Anja Karliczek den Bau einer Pilotanlage zur Batteriezellfertigung auf den Weg. Betrieben wird das von Macron als „Airbus der Batterien“ bezeichnete Vorhaben von den industriellen Projektpartnern PSA, den zugehörigen Töchtern Peugeot und Opel sowie der Total-Tochter Saft.

Ziel des Projektes ist es bis zum Jahr 2021 in einer ersten Phase die Forschung & Entwicklung in einem Pilotbetrieb zur Produktion von EV-Batterien umzusetzen. Hierauf aufbauend soll ab dem Jahr 2023 die reguläre Zellproduktion beginnen.
Nach aktuellen Angaben belaufen sich die Kosten für das Vorhaben am Saft Standort Nersac auf 200 Millionen Euro. Dabei sind derzeit Stellen für 200 hochqualifizierte Mitarbeiter in Planung. Diese sollen insbesondere das R&D Projektziel unterstützen, die weltweit hochwertigsten Batteriezellen für Elektrofahrzeuge zu entwickeln. Nach Fertigstellung der ersten Projektphase, die bis zum Jahre 2021 ausschließlich Entwicklungsziele in den Vordergrund stellt, soll im Anschluss die Batterieproduktion an den europäischen Standorten Douvrin (Peugeot/Citroën Werk) und Kaiserslautern (Opel Werk) zu gleichen Teilen umgesetzt werden.
In Summe sollen durch eine längerfristige Partnerschaft der Unternehmen PSA und Saft die Kompetenzen von der Fertigung der Batteriezelle bis hin zum fertigen EV-Fahrzeug in Europa gebündelt werden. Mit einer jährlichen Produktionsleistung von aktuell angekündigten 48 GWh soll eine von Asien unabhängige Versorgung kommender PSA EV-Modelle entstehen.
