General Motors (GM) und LG Chem planen einen gemeinsamen Standort zur Zellherstellung in Lordstown im US Bundesstaat Ohio, dessen Grundsteinlegung für Mitte 2020 geplant ist. Auf dem 64 Hektar großen Grundstück soll eine Zellfabrik entstehen, die mehr als 30 GWh pro Jahr an Batteriekapazität produzieren kann. Dabei sollen mehr als 1.100 Jobs geschaffen werden. Die geplante Investition beträgt bis zu 2,3 Mrd. US Dollar.

Die geplante Fabrik soll dabei von modernsten Herstellungsverfahren und Skaleneffekten über die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette profitieren, und sich aufgrund hochflexibler Fertigungsstraßen an Fortschritte in Fertigung und Materialien adaptiv anpassen können. Die Kollaboration zweier erfahrener Hersteller im Bereich der Batterietechnik schließt auch eine Entwicklungsvereinbarung ein, die sich das Ziel gesetzt hat, die Preise pro Kilowattstunde in der Produktion auf branchenführende Preise senken zu können. Ohio soll laut Mary Barra, GM Vorsitzende und Geschäftsführerin, mit seinen „hochqualifizierten Arbeitskräften eine entscheidende Rolle auf dem Weg in eine emissionsfreie Welt spielen“.
Die Kooperation zwischen OEM und Zellhersteller legt einen Vergleich zu dem zuletzt häufig etwas ambivalenten Verhältnis von Tesla und Panasonic nahe. Trotz offensichtlicher Ähnlichkeiten der Kooperation, liegt der Unterschied in der tiefe der Kooperation. Produziert Panasonic auf von Tesla geleaster Fläche Zellen, wird das geplante JV und damit die Zellfabrik zu gleichen Teilen zwischen GM und LG Chem aufgeteilt.
