In der typischen chinesischen schnellen Baugeschwindigkeit hat SK Innovation als Spezialist für Lithium-Ionen-Pouch Zellen nach nur 16 Monaten Bauzeit eine Batteriezellefertigung in Changzhou eröffnet.

Das neu errichtete Werk, dass ab 2020 mit einer Jahreskapazität von 7,5 GWh Batteriezellen produzieren soll, gehört SK Innovation jedoch nur zu 49 %. Die restlichen Anteile am Standort halten die Beijing Automotive Group und Beijing Electronics. Mit diesem frisch fertiggestellten und ersten Werk für Lithium-Ionen-Batteriesysteme außerhalb der südkoreanischen Heimat, schafft es SK Innovation auf die schwer erreichbare Förderliste der chinesischen Regierung und kann so auch von chinesischen Staatsmitteln profitieren.
SK Innovation generiert mit dem Stammwerk in Seosan in Korea, einem Werk in den USA und dem aktuell noch im Bau befindlichen europäischen Werk in Ungarn, eine zukünftige Gesamtspeicherkapazität von 19,7 GWh und erreicht damit schon fast die eigenen Zielvorgaben an die Gesamtspeicherkapazität von 20 GWh bis 2022.
Im Rennen der größten Zellfertiger ist SK Innovationen jedoch deutlich ins Hintertreffen geraten. Schon 2018 erreichte der koreanische Wettbewerber LG Chem, mit dem SK Innovation immer wieder Auseinandersetzung und zuletzt auch in den USA hatte, eine Gesamtkapazität von 51 GWh. Auch die Konkurrenz aus China ist läuft SK Innovation derzeit noch den Rang ab. CATL, bekannt unter anderem durch das in Deutschland entstehende Werk in Thüringen, erreicht beispielsweise aktuell eine Gesamtkapazität von ca. 40 GWh und ist somit die weltweite Nummer zwei in der Zellfertigung.
SK Innovation plant jedoch die eigenen Kapazitäten weiter drastisch zu erhöhen. Durch das im Gegensatz zu LG Chem gute Verhältnis zwischen SK Innovation und CATL, planen letzere Unternehmen ein weiteres Werk in China. SK Innovation selbst will hierfür zu den bereits 744,3 Mio. $ für das Werk in Changzhou weitere 488,3 Mio. $ investieren.
