Aus eigenen Angaben von GM gegenüber der US-Autogewerkschaft United Auto Workers wird deutlich, dass das Unternehmen über die eigene Produktion von Batteriezellen nachdenkt. Im Zusammenhang mit Vertragsverhandlungen mit der Gewerkschaft sind demnach insgesamt 7 Milliarden Dollar für Investitionen in den nächsten vier Jahren zugesagt. Dazu zählt auch die Produktion eines elektrisch betriebenen Pickups in Detroit. Zu der möglichen Batterieproduktionsstätte in Lordstown im Bundesstaat Ohio sind noch keine genaueren Informationen bekannt. Die Investitionen zielen weiterhin auch auf die Entwicklung eines verbesserten elektrischen Antriebsstranges und den Kernprodukten LKWs und Nutzfahrzeuge. Der Automobilriese setzt aktuell Sparmaßnahmen in Form von Werksschließungen um, wodurch Mittel für die Weiterentwicklung der Elektromobilität frei werden. Die Elektrifizierung in den USA geht vergleichsweise nur langsam voran.
