Die für die Elektroautos notwendigen Metalle können nach dem Mittwochsbericht des Energieberatungs- und Forschungsunternehmens Wood Mackenzie in den nächsten Jahren knapp werden. Gerade Lithium, Kobalt und Nickel begrenzen somit den Anstieg der Produktion von Elektrofahrzeugen, da die Anbieter der erhöhten Nachfrage nicht standhalten können. Weiterhin ist die Gesamtmenge der Metalle auf der Erde insgesamt begrenzt, sodass für den zukünftigen Bedarf durch den voraussichtlichen Anstieg der Elektromobilität nicht ausreichend Rohstoffe zur Verfügung stehen könnten. Da viele Automobilhersteller planen, langfristig vollständig elektrisch zu fahren ist ein entsprechender Rohstoffengpass wahrscheinlich. Weitere Metalle wie Mangan oder Graphit gelten als eher unkritisch.
