LG Chem hat angekündigt, ein neues Werk für die Kathodenherstellung für umgerechnet rund 420 Millionen USD zu erbauen. In einer Telefonkonferenz mit Investoren erläuterte Jeong Ho-young, dass LG Chem die Abhängigkeit von fremden Lieferungen deutlich reduzieren möchte. Bislang existieren Werke und Südkorea und in China.

Jede Lithium-Ionen-Batteriezelle besteht aus zwei Elektroden, der Kathode und der Anode, sowie einem Separator, der die Elektroden gegeneinander isoliert, für die Ionen und das Elektrolyt aber durchlässig ist. Als Kathodenmaterial wird meist Aluminiumfolie und als Anodenmaterial Kupferfolie verwendet. Auf den Folien befinden sich die Aktivmaterialien, in die Lithium eingelagert ist. Die fertig produzierten Elektroden werden in einer Reihe von Schritten zu einer Zelle zusammengesetzt und abschließend mit Elektrolyt befüllt.

Gleichzeitig will das Handelsblatt aus Insiderkreisen erfahren haben, dass LG neben seinen bestehenden Werken eine weitere Investition von rund 1,7 Milliarden USD für eine Batteriezellfabrik in den USA geplant hat.
