SK Innovation hat in Südkorea angekündigt, künftig auf die Mischverhältnisse 7-1-2 und 6-2-2 vollständig zu verzichten und lediglich 8-1-1 weiterzuverwenden. Bis 2022 soll die Entwicklung von 9-0,5-0,5 abgeschlossen sein und in die Serienproduktion gehen. Gleichzeitig solle die Produktionskapazität bis 2025 um das 20-fache auf 100 GWh gesteigert werden.

SK Innovation sieht sich momentan massiven Vorwürfen durch LG Chem ausgesetzt, durch die Rekrutierung von Mitarbeitern gezielt an Geschäftsgeheimnisse von LG Chem gelangt zu sein. LG Chem fordert ein komplettes Importverbot sowie eine Entschädigung für entgangene Erlöse.

Auch Volkswagen durfte die Rivalität der Südkoreaner bereits am eigenen Leibe erfahren. Im Rahmen der Pläne zum Aufbau eigener Gigafabriken mit SK Innovation drohte LG Chem VW nicht weiter zu beliefern.

SK Innovation zeichnet mit der kompletten Umstellung auf 8-1-1 und der Forschung an einer weiteren Erhöhung des Nickel-Anteils den Weg für die Lithium-Ionen-Technologie der nächsten Jahre vor. CATL und weitere große Hersteller haben ebenfalls eine Umstellung geplant. Die ursprüngliche Batterie des BMW i3 hatte ein Verhältnis von 1:1:1. Sowohl die Weiterentwicklung der Technologie als auch die Marktlage bleiben spannend.
