Das japanische Unternehmen „SoftBank Corp.“ hat die Entwicklung eines Batteriepacks für den Einsatz in Höhenplattformen für die kabellose Kommunikation bekanntgegeben. Das Pack enthalte Lithium-Metall-Batteriezellen des Herstellers „Enpower Japan“ mit einer spezifischen Energie von 439 Wattstunden pro Kilogramm. Anfang 2023 hatte SoftBank zusammen mit der Tochtergesellschaft HAPSMobile einen Zyklustest des Akkupacks in der Stratosphäre vorgenommen.
Hohe Energiedichte auch auf Pack-Ebene
Im Vergleich zu handelsüblichen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien können Lithium-Metall-Batterien eine höhere spezifische Energiedichte aufweisen. Das Anlegen eines hohen Zwangsdrucks während des Ladens und Entladens kann zudem ihre Zykluslebensdauer verbessern. Die Erhöhung des Bauteilgewichts durch den Zwangsmechanismus benachteiligt jedoch Lithium-Metall-Batteriepacks. In Zusammenarbeit mit ENAX habe SoftBank das Gewicht der Gehäusekomponenten reduzieren und sich damit einem Akkupack mit einer Energiedichte von 300 Wattstunden je Kilogramm auf Pack-Ebene annähern können. Vergleichbare Lithium-Ionen-Akkupacks für denselben Zweck lägen derzeit bei etwa 190 Wattstunden pro Kilo.
Einsatz auch in industriell genutzten Drohnen
Neben den Lithium-Metall-Batteriezellen hat SoftBank in Zusammenarbeit mit „Enpower Japan“ einen Elektrolyten entwickelt, der in stratosphärischen Umgebungen mit niedrigem Atmosphärendruck weniger anfällig für Gasbildung ist. In naher Zukunft will SoftBank ein großes Batteriepaket entwickeln, das als Energiequelle für den Betrieb von Höhenplattformen dienen soll. Das Unternehmen erwägt zudem, das Akkupaket auch für industrielle Drohnenanwendungen zu nutzen.
