Die Hyundai Motor Group und der Batterieentwickler und -produzent SK On haben einen gemeinsamen Standort für eine neue Fabrik zur Herstellung von Elektrofahrzeug-Batterien ausgewählt. Von Bartow County im US-Bundesstaat Georgia aus wollen die beiden südkoreanischen Unternehmen künftig Hyundai-Automobilwerke in den USA beliefern. Die Partner investieren vier bis fünf Milliarden US-Dollar in die Batteriefabrik, die 2025 mit der Produktion beginnen soll.
Georgia ist „Drehscheibe für Elektroindustrie“
Erst vor kurzem hatten Hyundai und SK On eine Absichtserklärung zu einer Partnerschaft für eine neue Batterieanlage in den USA unterzeichnet. Das in Georgia vorhandene Hafensystem, die generell umfangreiche Infrastruktur, qualifizierte Arbeitskräfte und das wirtschaftsfreundliche Klima positionierten Georgia als „Drehscheibe für die Elektroindustrie“, heißt es in einer offiziellen Mitteilung von Hyundai. Im vergangenen Mai hatte der Autobauer außerdem bereits Pläne bekanntgegeben, 5,54 Milliarden US-Dollar in das Projekt „Hyundai Motor Group Megaplant America“ zu investieren – eine Elektrofahrzeug-Produktionsstätte in Bryan County. Der erste Spatenstich für das Werk war im Oktober erfolgt.
