Die „Second Life“-Energiespeicher-Unternehmen Cactos und Smartville aus Finnland und Kalifornien arbeiten derzeit jeweils verstärkt an der Umwandlung von alten Elektroauto-Batterien zu stationären Energiespeichern. Die in San Diego ansässige Smartville Inc. hat dafür einen Zuschuss von sechs Millionen US-Dollar aus dem 74-Millionen-Dollar-Programm des Energieministeriums erhalten.

Ganze Packs für effizientere Abläufe

Die finanziellen Mittel sollen für die Produktentwicklung des Gehäusesystems in einer zweiten und dritten Version, für die Zertifizierung des Produkts nach UL 9540A („Thermal Runaway“-Test) und für die Zertifizierung der Produktionsanlage nach UL 1974 verwendet werden. Das aktuelle Produkt mit dem Namen „MOAB“ ist ein Speichersystem mit einer Kapazität von 250 Kilowatt/500 Kilowattstunden, das ausrangierte E-Mobil-Batteriepacks von Tesla und Nissans Leaf verwendet. Smartville setzt dabei ausschließlich komplette Batteriepacks ein. Nur so lasse sich der Einsatz der Speicher skalieren. Eine Zerlegung der Packs ergebe arbeitstechnisch und finanziell keinen Sinn, betont Smartville-Mitbegründer und -Präsident Mike Ferry.

Cactos setzt auf Module aus Tesla-Packs

Auch das finnische Unternehmen Cactos nutzt in seinen Speichern Tesla-Batterien. Diese werden von einem Batterie-Recycling-Anbieter in Norwegen bezogen und in Module zerlegt. Laut CEO Oskari Jaakkola ist Cactos unabhängig davon, ob es wiederverwertete oder neue Batterien verwendet. Zwar habe man als reiner „Second Life“-Betrieb begonnen, doch würden künftig auch neue Akkus in Cactos-Produkten zum Einsatz kommen. „Second Life“-Module seien nicht wesentlich billiger, allerdings seien die Lieferzeiten um ein Vielfaches kürzer. Für das Geschäftsjahr bis April 2024 rechne Jaakkola mit der Auslieferung von 100 Einheiten seiner 100-Kilowattstunden-Speicher.
