Der belgische Materialtechnologie- und Recycling-Konzern Umicore hat im polnischen Nysa eine Produktionsanlage für Batteriematerialien offiziell eröffnet. Dabei handelt es sich Unternehmensangaben zufolge um die erste „Gigafactory für Kathodenmaterialien“ in Europa. Umicore hatte 2019 mit dem Bau der Anlage und im vergangenen Juli bereits mit der Produktion begonnen.
Kontinuierliche Steigerung der Produktion
Der neue Standort mache Umicore zum ersten europäischen Unternehmen mit einer vollständig zirkulären Wertschöpfungskette für Batteriematerialien. Die Produktionskapazität soll bis Ende 2022 auf 20 Gigawattstunden hochgefahren und bis 2024 verdoppelt werden. Im Rahmen von Ausbaumaßnahmen verfüge das Werk über das Potenzial, bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts ein Jahresvolumen von mehr als 200 Gigawattstunden zu erreichen. Energie bezieht das Werk aus einem nahegelegenen Onshore-Windpark. Laut Umicore ist die Produktion in der neuen Anlage „kohlenstoffneutral“.
