Der europäische Automobilkonzern Stellantis und der südkoreanische Batterieproduzent LG Energy Solution befinden sich Gerüchten zufolge kurz vor der offiziellen Verkündung der Standortwahl ihrer ersten nordamerikanischen Batteriefabrik. In der kanadischen Provinz Ontario könnten demnach Lithium-Ionen-Batteriezellen für die Elektrofahrzeuge von Stellantis mit einer jährlichen Gesamtkapazität von 40 Gigawattstunden hergestellt werden.
Batteriewerk wohl in Windsor
Bereits im Oktober 2021 hatten Stellantis und die LG-Chem-Tochtergesellschaft LG Energy Solution angekündigt, im Rahmen eines Joint Ventures ein Batteriewerk in Nordamerika errichten zu wollen. Mögliche Standorte wurden damals nicht kommuniziert. Nun ist laut „Bloomberg News“ die Entscheidung auf das kanadische County Windsor-Essex in der Provinz Ontario gefallen. Diese Standortwahl sei für Stellantis sinnvoll, da in unmittelbarer Nähe bereits eine Fahrzeug-Produktionsstätte des Unternehmens liegt.
Dort werden derzeit unter anderem Plug-in-Hybride der Marke Chrysler hergestellt. Bereits 2020 hatte der Automobilkonzern mitgeteilt, einige Investitionen im Bereich elektrifizierter Fahrzeuge an seinem Werk in Windsor tätigen zu wollen. Von einer Batteriefabrik war damals noch keine Rede. Eine offizielle Ankündigung wird „Bloomberg News“ zufolge für die kommenden Tage erwartet.
Produktion soll 2024 beginnen
Vorgesehen sei, dass die ersten Batteriezellen im ersten Quartal 2024 vom Band laufen. Eine mit 40 Gigawattstunden recht große Kapazität ist für das kleine Werk in Windsor laut dem Portal „insideevs“ ein beachtliches Volumen. Vorausgesetzt, die Zellen werden ausschließlich dem bestehenden Werk zugeführt, würde dies bedeuten, dass das Unternehmen die Elektrifizierung des Fahrzeug-Montagewerks massiv forciert.
Weitere Gigafabrik in Nordamerika
Unterdessen plane Stellantis mit dem ebenfalls in Korea ansässigen Batteriehersteller Samsung SDI eine weitere Gigafabrik in Nordamerika. Die beiden Partner beabsichtigen demnach, eine Produktionsstätte mit einer Kapazität von 23 Gigawattstunden zu errichten, wobei optional eine Steigerung auf ebenfalls 40 Gigawattstunden bestehe. Auch für diese zweite Fabrik wurde bislang noch kein Standort kommuniziert. Ein Produktionsstart sei jedoch bereits für das Jahr 2025 anvisiert.
