Der US-amerikanische Autobauer Ford, der koreanische Batteriehersteller SK On und die türkische Koç Holding haben eine gemeinsame Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet. Gegenstand der Vereinbarung ist es, in der Türkei eine der europaweit größten Produktionsstätten für Nutzfahrzeugbatterien zu errichten. Das Batteriewerk soll in der Nähe der Hauptstadt Ankara entstehen und ab 2025 eine jährliche Produktionskapazität von 30 bis 45 Gigawattstunden erreichen.

NCM-Zellen mit 90 Prozent Nickelanteil

Laut den drei Partnern soll die Gigafabrik Lithium-Ionen-Batteriezellen hauptsächlich für die künftigen batterieelektrischen Nutzfahrzeuge von Ford produzieren. Die Zellchemie sei dabei eine hochnickelhaltige NCM- (Nickel-Kobalt-Mangan-) Zelle von SK On, einem Tochterunternehmen von SK Innovation. SK On beliefert derzeit Ford mit Batteriezellen für das elektrische Pick-up-Modell „F150 Lightning“. Dabei handelt es sich um NCM-Zellen mit einem Nickelanteil von 90 Prozent. Medienberichten zufolge könnten in dem geplanten Batteriewerk identische oder sehr ähnliche Batteriezellen hergestellt werden.

Bis 2030 jedes Jahr 240 Gigawattstunden

Ford hatte bereits angekündigt, bis 2030 eine jährliche weltweite Batteriekapazität von 240 Gigawattstunden für Elektrofahrzeuge bereitzustellen. 170 bis 185 davon sollen in Kooperation mit SK On produziert werden. In Form des Joint Ventures „BlueOval SK“ plant Ford, mit SK On in Nordamerika jährlich bis zu 140 Gigawattstunden herzustellen. Weitere Werke in Europa und China sollen die übrigen 100 Gigawattstunden produzieren.

SK On auf Jahre hinweg ausgelastet

SK On hat indes verkündet, sich zu einem gewichtigen globalen Batterielieferanten entwickeln zu wollen. Dies solle mit einer Gesamtkapazität von 220 Gigawattstunden aus den Joint Ventures und 500 Gigawattstunden aus den eigenen Produktionsstätten bis 2025 beziehungsweise 2030 geschehen. Laut der jüngstern Unternehmensmitteilung beläuft sich der kumulierte Auftragsbestand bis Ende 2021 bereits auf 1.600 Gigawattstunden. Angesichts der aktuellen Produktionskapazitäten sei SK On für mehrere Jahre ausgelastet.
