Das US-Unternehmen „Amprius Technologies“ hat die ersten kommerziell erhältlichen Siliziumanoden-Lithium-Ionen-Batterien verkauft. Die Zellen mit einer gravimetrischen Energiedichte von 450 Wattstunden pro Kilogramm und einer volumetrischen Energiedichte von 1.150 Wattstunden pro Liter wurden laut Angaben des Unternehmens von einem Satellitenhersteller erworben.
„Produkte mit unübertroffener Leistung“
Die Amprius-Technologie beruht auf Silizium-Nanokabeln. Basierend auf der Weiterentwicklung der Technologie, konnte die im November 2021 angekündigte Energiedichte von 405 Wattstunden pro Liter sogar noch erhöht werden. Dies unterstreiche die Roadmap des Unternehmens zur Bereitstellung von „Produkten mit unübertroffener Leistung“, sagt Jon Bornstein, COO von Amprius Technologies.

Derzeitige Lithium-Ionen-Batterien weisen anodenseitig primär Graphit und Kohlenstoff auf. Die Anwendung von Silizium als Ersatzlösung werde bereits seit langem entwickelt. Grund dafür sei die deutlich höhere Energiekapazität von 4.200 Milliamperestunden pro Gramm im Vergleich zu 372 Milliamperestunden für Graphit. Lithium-Ionen-Batterien auf Siliziumbasis weisen dadurch eine bis zu 40 Prozent höhere Energiedichte auf.
Standort für erste Massenproduktion bald bekannt
Seit 2018 produziert Amprius in seinem Werk im kalifornischen Fremont Batteriezellen, die auf dieser Technologie basieren. Derzeit arbeite das Unternehmen an der ersten Massenproduktionsanlage. Der Standort soll noch im ersten Quartal 2022 bekanntgegeben werden.
