Das US-amerikanische Unternehmen „Redwood Materials“ um Ex-Tesla-CTO JB Straubel hat seine Expansion nach Europa verkündet. In einem Interview mit dem Magazin „Spiegel“ berichtete Straubel von mindestens zwei Recycling-Anlagen und der Produktion von Kupferfolien sowie Kathodenmaterial. Dafür sei eine Investition von zehn Milliarden Euro vorgesehen.
Deutschland als Standort gehandelt
Die Heimat der geplanten hydrometallurgischen Recycling-Anlage ist derzeit noch unbekannt. Straubel grenzte die in Frage kommenden Standorte indes jedoch auf Deutschland, Skandinavien, Großbritannien und Osteuropa ein. Die Inbetriebnahme ist für das Jahr 2024 vorgesehen. Die Expansion soll durch Ex-BASF-Manager Dirk Demuth und Redwood-Vizepräsident Odd-Even Bustnes geleitet werden. Ziel sei ein geschlossenes Ökosystem mit reduzierten Lebenszyklus-CO2-Emissionen für sämtliche Lithium-Ionen-Batterien.
Weitere Gerüchte
Basierend auf Ankündigungen, denen zufolge Panasonic und somit Tesla die ersten Batterien mit recyceltem Material von Redwood erhalten soll, ranken sich Gerüchte um ein neues Werk in der Nähe von Grünheide. Redwood war zuletzt jedoch eine Kooperation mit Ford in den USA eingegangen, um den Autobauer künftig mit Material zu beliefern. Durch Straubels Sitz im Verwaltungsrat von Quantumscape ist zudem ein Standort in der Nähe der Zellproduktion von VW im Gespräch.
