Die Primobius GmbH hat den ausgebauten Zerkleinerungs- und Aufbereitungskreislauf einer Demonstrationsanlage als kommerzielle Batterie-Recycling-Fabrik in Betrieb genommen. Dem Kooperationsprojekt mit Standort im nordrhein-westfälischen Hilchenbach waren rund drei Jahre Forschung und Entwicklung vorausgegangen.
Joint Venture fürs Batterie-Recycling
Primobius ist das Ergebnis einer Partnerschaft zwischen dem an der australischen Börse notierten Unternehmen Neometals Ltd. und dem deutschen Technologiekonzern SMS group. Das Joint Venture soll eine fortschrittliche Recycling-Technologie etablieren, die eine nachhaltige Methode zur Rückgewinnung von wertvollen Rohstoffen wie Lithium, Nickel und Kobalt bietet, die aus alten Lithium-Ionen-Batterien der Elektromobilität und der Unterhaltungsindustrie stammen. Die zurückgewonnenen Materialien sollen dabei so weit aufbereitet werden, dass sie sich anschließend wieder in die Batterie-Kreislaufwirtschaft einspeisen lassen.
Bis zu zehn Tonnen Altmaterial pro Tag
In den vergangenen Monaten hatte Primobius eine Demonstrationsanlage zum Batterie-Recycling betrieben. Die erste Stufe umfasste einen mechanischen Schredder und einen Aufbereitungskreislauf. Die zweite Stufe beinhaltete den hydrometallurgischen Raffinationskreislauf, in dem die zerkleinerten Bestandteile mittels Säuren und Basen in einer flüssigen Lösung ausgefällt und aufbereitet werden. Nach dem Abschluss der Pilotversuche wurde die Anlage zu einem kommerziellen Recycling-Werk umgebaut. Laut Primobius soll die neue Zerkleinerungsanlage ab dem ersten Quartal 2022 eine tägliche Kapazität von bis zu zehn Tonnen Altmaterial bewältigen.
Schnelle Reaktion auf frühe Nachfrage
Die zeitnahe Aufnahme des kommerziellen Betriebs sei eine Reaktion auf die unmittelbare Nachfrage der Hersteller von Elektrofahrzeugen und der Produzenten von Zellen nach sicheren Entsorgungsdienstleistungen. Mit dem Recycling-Service, der sich in Größe und Umfang beliebig anpassen lasse, wolle das Unternehmen eine nachhaltige hydrometallurgische Rückgewinnung der Rohstoffe in Batteriequalität realisieren und die gesetzlichen Anforderungen zur Schließung des Kreislaufs erfüllen. Das flexible Geschäftsmodell könne in Zukunft eine Konfiguration mit mehreren Spoke- und Hub-Anlagen für Recycling-Lösungen in der gewünschten Größe, am gewünschten Ort und zum gewünschten Zeitpunkt liefern.
