Der Lithium-Förderer Vulcan Energy will im Oberrheingraben mit Hilfe eines Geothermiekraftwerks Lithium gewinnen. Außerdem plant das deutsch-australische Unternehmen laut eigenen Angaben, eine Lithiumhydroxid-Anlage des Zero-Carbon-Lithium-Projekts im Chemiepark Höchst in der Nähe von Frankfurt am Main zu errichten.
Pilotanlage soll Ende 2021 an den Start gehen
Konkret ist es die Absicht des deutschen Tochterunternehmens Vulcan Energie Ressourcen GmbH, im Oberrheingraben Lithium aus Thermalwasser zu gewinnen. Mittels einer Geothermie-Anlage solle Lithiumhydroxid aus dem Wasser gefiltert werden, heißt es. Dabei arbeitet Vulcan Energy mit den Pfalzwerken im Geothermiekraftwerk Insheim zusammen. Ende 2021 soll die Pilotanlage des Zero-Carbon-Lithium-Projekts mit der Lithiumgewinnung starten.
Probe übertreffe bisherige Qualität
Laut der Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe emthält das Thermalwasser 200 bis 400 Milligramm Lithium pro Liter. Dies sei vergleichbar mit einigen südamerikanischen Salzseen. Das erste Lithiumhydroxid-Monohydrat (LHM) habe Vulcan Energy in einer Sorptionsanlage außerhalb des Zero-Carbon-Lithium-Projekts gewonnen. Die Probe solle „herkömmliche LHM-Produkte in Batteriequalität übertreffen“. Zu den bekanntesten Großkunden des Unternehmens zählen bislang LG Energy Solution und Renault.
Versorgungszentrum für Europas Batterie-Industrie
Die darüber hinaus von Vulcan Energy geplante Lithiumhydroxid-Anlage im Chemiepark Höchst nahe Frankfurt am Main soll als zentrale Verarbeitungsstelle dienen. Dabei soll aus mehreren Sorptionsanlagen Lithiumchlorid zu Lithiumhydroxid-Monohydrat verarbeitet werden. Es sei vorgesehen, vom Standort Höchst aus die europäische Batterie- und Elektroindustrie mit C02-neutralem LHM zu versorgen.
„Erstes Projekt mit Netto-Null-Treibhausgasemissionen“
Den Start der kommerziellen Lithium-Gewinnung in Deutschland strebt Vulcan Energy indes für das Jahr 2024 an. Zu Beginn sollen 15.000 Tonnen jährlich gefördert werden. In der zweiten Stufe soll ab 2025 die Jahreskapazität auf insgesamt 40.000 Tonnen steigen. Ziel sei es, „das erste Rohstoffprojekt mit Netto-Null-Treibhausgasemissionen in der Welt zu sein“.
