Der asiatische Batteriehersteller CATL plant offenbar durch einen Ankauf von Unternehmensanteilen die Absicherung seines Kobaltbedarfs. Aktuellen Medienberichten zufolge verhandelt CATL mit dem chinesischen Bergbauunternehmen „Jinchuan Group International Resources“ über den Erwerb von rund zehn Prozent der Firma, umgerechnet rund 218 Millionen Euro.
Zuerst doppelt so viel Rohstoff gefordert
Ursprünglich habe CATL 20 Prozent der Anteile und die doppelte Menge Kobalts erwerben wollen. Die Jinchuan Group habe dieses Angebot jedoch abgelehnt. Laut der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters bekundet neben CATL auch das in Shanghai sitzende Unternehmen Huayou Interesse an einem rund zehnprozentigen Firmenanteil der Jinchuan Group. Durch den Vormarsch der Elektromobilität und den Bedarf an Speichersystemen verhärtet sich derzeit der Preiskampf um die seltenen und wertvollen Batterierohstoffe. Bereits in der Vergangenheit hatte CATL in die Kupfer-Kobaltmine Kisanfu im Kongo sowie in Lithium-Förderer und Nickel-Lieferanten in Nordamerika investiert.
Jinchuan peilt 13.000 Tonnen Kobaltförderung bis 2023 an
Die Hongkonger Jinchuan Group betreibt in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo eine Kobaltmine, aus der CATL sich jährlich mindestens 3.000 Tonnen des Rohstoffs sichern will. In der kongolesischen Ruashi-Mine errichtete die Jinchuan Group im vergangenen Jahr ein Produktionsvolumen von 4.158 Tonnen Kobalt. Die jährliche Kapazität soll dort bis zum Jahr 2023 auf rund 13.000 Tonnen wachsen.
Jinchuan International teilte indes mit, dass es „vorläufige Gespräche mit unabhängigen Dritten“ über eine mögliche Aktienausgabe gegeben habe, dass diese Gespräche jedoch auch „verfrüht gewesen“ seien. Sowohl CATL als auch Huayou hingegen dementieren bislang eine mögliche Kooperation.
