Die Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) hat ein Kooperationsprojekt zur Weiterentwicklung der Natrium-Ionen-Batterietechnik ins Leben gerufen. Hintergrund ist, dass der Batterietyp sich in jüngster Zeit als Hinweis auf eine vielversprechende Zukunftstechnologie hervorgetan hat. Einen entscheidenden Impuls hatte zuletzt der chinesische Hersteller CATL mit seiner Vorstellung einer eigenen Natrium-Batterie-Entwicklung gesetzt.
Optimierung der Anode im Blick
Im Zuge des neuen Projekts soll die Anode der Batterien verbessert werden, die beim Natrium-Ionen-Typus einen speziellen Aufbau aufweist. Im Vergleich zu aktuell gängigen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien basieren Natrium-Ionen-Batterien auf der Verwendung von sogenanntem Hard-Carbon. Nachteilig daran ist, dass Poren und Gänge des ungeordneten Kohlenstoffs nicht nur mit Natrium-Ionen befüllt werden, sondern dass auch Elektrolyt eindringt. Dies führt zu einem Verlust von Speicherkapazitäten, wodurch die Gesamteffizienz der Natrium-Batterie leidet.
„Maßgeschneiderte Verbundwerkstoffe entwickeln“
Diese Problematik auf der Anodenseite der Natrium-Ionen-Batterie soll jetzt durch das Berliner Kooperationsprojekt gelöst werden, das sich der Suche nach einem geeigneten Anodenmaterial widmet. Das Projekt soll im erst kürzlich vom BAM eröffneten Batterietestzentrum umgesetzt werden. „Es ist sehr komplex, die ideale Struktur für diese neuartigen Materialien zu finden“, erklärt Tim-Patrick Fellinger, Leiter des Verbundprojekts und BAM-Experte für Energiematerialien: „Wir wollen dafür maßgeschneiderte Verbundwerkstoffe entwickeln, die möglichst vielen Natrium-Ionen Platz bieten, Elektrolyte aber fernhalten. Die Herausforderung ist es, ein Material zu finden, das zugleich sicher und effizient ist.“
