Apple steht offenbar mit den chinesischen Batterieproduzenten CATL und BYD in frühen Verhandlungen. Laut der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters lotet der iPhone-Hersteller derzeit eine mögliche Zulieferung von Batterien für ein seit längerem geplantes eigenes Elektromobil aus. Dabei könnten Lithium-Eisenphosphat-Batterien im Mittelpunkt stehen.
Apple macht US-Standort zur Voraussetzung
Insidern zufolge macht Apple den Aufbau von Produktionsanlagen in den Vereinigten Staaten zur Bedingung für eine Kooperation. Der aktuell weltweit größte Batteriezellhersteller CATL zeige sich aufgrund der politischen Spannungen zwischen den USA und China sowie aus Kostengründen jedoch zurückhaltend, heißt es in dem Bericht.
Eisen statt Nickel und Kobalt?
Apple bevorzuge Lithium-Eisenphosphat-Batterien, die preiswerter zu produzieren seien, da sie Eisen anstelle der vergleichsweise teureren Metalle Nickel und Kobalt verwenden. Die Akkus gelten als günstig und langlebig. Gleichzeitig sollen sie jedoch keine allzu hohe Energiedichte bieten. Der US-Konzern will außerdem wohl auf Module verzichten, so dass die Zellen direkt in die Batterie eingebaut würden. Noch sei jedoch unklar, um welche Technologie es in den Verhandlungen mit den chinesischen Batterieproduzenten letztlich gehe.
Wie Reuters im Dezember 2020 erstmals berichtet hatte, arbeitet Apple an einem selbstfahrenden Auto für Privatkunden, dessen Produktion spätestens 2024 starten soll.
