Der Elektromobil-Pionier Tesla erwartet laut eigenen Angaben, künftig mehr als eine Milliarde US-Dollar pro Jahr in Batterierohstoffe aus Australien zu investieren. Das Land verfüge über eine zuverlässige Bergbauindustrie und verantwortungsvolle Produktionspraktiken. Robyn Denholm, selbst Australierin und Mitglied des Verwaltungsrats von Tesla, verkündete die Pläne jüngst bei einer australischen Rohstoffkonferenz.
75 Prozent des Lithiums schon jetzt aus „Down Under“
Tesla bezieht demnach bereits Dreiviertel seines Lithium- und mehr als ein Drittel seines Nickel-Bedarfs aus „Down Under“. Dabei besäßen die australischen Minenbetreiber laut Denholm eine für Tesla wichtige „gute Reputation, viel Erfahrung und Professionalität“ im Abbau der wichtigen Batterierohstoffe. In der jüngeren Vergangenheit war Tesla immer wieder auf mitunter medienwirksamer Suche nach neuen Batterierohstoffquellen für seine stetig wachsende Produktion von E-Fahrzeugen.
Nickel rückt in den Blickpunkt
Noch Ende 2020 stand dabei vor allem Nickel als wichtiges Element der NMC-Zellchemie im Fokus, für das Tesla zu wenig Rohstoffquellen verfügbar sah. Damals stand mit Blick auf Nickel auch eine sich abzeichnende Partnerschaft zwischen Tesla und dem brasilianischen Bergbau-Unternehmen Vale im Gespräch. Kern des angestrebten Abkommens war, große Nickel-Mengen aus Kanada zu beziehen, wo Vale einige Minen betreibt.
