BASF plant offenbar mit Investitionen für den Aufbau einer Batteriefabrik in Ontario. Laut einer aktuellen Meldung der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters bewirbt sich der deutsche Konzern derzeit um kanadische Fördermittel. Das Unternehmen spezialisiert sich immer mehr auf die Produktion von Kathodenmaterial (CAM), das für die Produktion von Batteriezellen im weltweit stetig größer werdenden Maßstab benötigt wird.
Nähe zu Rohstoffen und US-Markt
Der Konzeren mit Sitz in Ludwigshafen am Rhein hat sich dabei zu einem Schlüssellieferanten für CAM entwickelt und vor kurzem bereits eine Patentpartnerschaft mit dem belgischen Mitbewerber Umicore abgeschlossen. Aktuell bekundet BASF, dass der nordamerikanische Markt für den Chemie-Riesen äußerst reizvoll sei. Eine Produktionsanlage in Kanada sei interessant, da sie von der Nähe zum US-Automobilmarkt und von einfach verfügbaren Rohstoffquellen profitiere. Lithium, Graphit, Kobalt und Nickel sind in Kanada verfügbar.
Ford und GM in der Nachbarschaft
Zusammen mit der japanischen Toda Kogyo Corp ist BASF bereits an zwei Standorten in Nordamerika – in Ohio und in Michigan – in der CAM-Produktion aktiv. Sollte das kanadische Werk hinzukommen, würde es ähnlich wie die beiden anderen Fertigungsstätten von der direkten Nachbarschaft zu den großen Produktionsstandorten von Ford und GM profitieren. Beide US-Autobauer hatten ambitionierte E-Mobilitätspläne verkündet.
