Laut aktuellsten Medienberichten aus Süd-Korea, der Heimat von Batterieweltmarktgröße LG Chem, hat der Konzern wohl seine Entwicklungen zu einem batteriemodullosen System abgeschlossen. Damit soll künftig eine über die letzten Jahre vertraut gewordene Ebene der Batterieproduktion, das Batteriemodul, entfallen. Auch Tesla und Wettbewerber CATL sind bestrebt die Batterietechnik um die Ebene der Module zu reduzieren.
Der Verzicht auf Batteriemodule führt dazu, dass die Batteriezellen noch effektiver in einem begrenzten Bauraum, insbesondere bei mobilen Anwendungen, integriert werden können. Das wiederum führt dann dazu, dass die Energiedichte direkt um 10% steigt und die Kosten für die Herstellung einer Traktionsbatterie um 30% fallen.
Die Idee, die Ebenen der Batterieproduktion, Zelle, Modul und Pack zu überdenken, hat LG Chem nicht exklusiv. Auch der chinesisch Batteriehersteller CATL war hier bereits aktiv und hatte schon auf der IAA im Jahr 2019 erste Ideen zum Konzept vorgestellt. Auch Tesla plant die Reduzierung gleich mehrerer Ebenen der Batterie und geht damit noch einen Schritt weiter. Tesla hatte im Rahmen seiner ausführlichen Weiterentwicklungsstrategie auf dem Battery-Day die Idee vorgestellt, künftig Batteriezellen direkt in den Fahrzeugrahmen zu intergieren. Eine Vision, die nur noch auf Batteriezellen beruhen würde.
