Mit einer optimierten Batteriezelltechnik möchte SK Innovation in das Jahr 2021 starten. Insbesondere sollen die Batterien für schnelle Ladevorgänge optimiert sein und so, im Batteriesystemen verbaut, Reichweiten von 800 – 1200 km mit nur zwei 10-minütigen Schnellladestopps (ausreichend für 150 – 200 km neue Reichweite) ermöglichen. Die neuen Zellen sollen trotz Schnellladungen auf über 1000 Zyklen ausgelegt sein.
In den neuen Batteriezellen, die auf einem erhöhten Nickelanteil der 9XX-NMC-Technologie basieren und somit Kobalt und Mangan in der Batterie minimieren, sieht SK Innovation das Potenzial, dass diese einen wichtigen Schritt in der Verbreitung der Elektromobilität spielen könnten. Neben den bereits genannten, soll auch die Energiedichte ansteigen.
Dabei ist es im Zuge der Entwicklungen das von SK Innovation ausgegebene Ziel Batterien zu produzieren, welche den Anforderungen der Langstrecke gerecht werden. Das führe dann auch dazu, dass die aktuell bei Langstreckenfahrzeugen noch sehr wuchtigen Batterien kompakter und leichter werden könnten.
SK Innovation beliefert heute eine Vielzahl von Automobilherstellern mit seinen Pouch-Batteriezellen, darunter zum Beispiel die Marken VW und Audi. Mit dem ebenfalls koreanischen Fahrzeughersteller Hyundai, zu dem auch die Marke Kia gehört, entwickelt SK Innovation aktuell sogar ein gesamtheitliches Batterieökosystem, beginnend bei der Produktion der Zellen, über die Nutzung im Fahrzeug, bis hin zum Recycling für Second-Life-Anwendungen.
