Northvolt hat die Unterzeichnung einer Privatplatzierung in Höhe von 600 Millionen US-Dollar unter der Leitung von Baillie Gifford, der Merchant Banking Division von Goldman Sachs und der Volkswagen AG, die es dem Unternehmen ermöglicht, weitere Investitionen in den Ausbau seiner Produktions- und Recyclingkapazitäten sowie in F&E-Aktivitäten zu tätigen bekanntgegeben.
„Wir befinden uns mitten in einem Wettlauf um den Aufbau von Produktionskapazitäten in Europa, und ich glaube, dass die Unternehmen, die Talente und Kapital am besten anziehen und gleichzeitig ihre Pläne am schnellsten skalieren, am erfolgreichsten sein werden“, sagt Northvolt-Mitbegründer und -CEO Peter Carlsson und ergänzt: „Mit diesen erstklassigen Partnern haben wir eine solide Grundlage geschaffen, um unsere Pläne zur großtechnischen Herstellung umweltfreundlicher Batterien in Europa umzusetzen.“
Die Kapitalerhöhung soll drei Kernthemen von Northvolt bedienen. Zuerst soll der Ausbau der Produktionskapazitäten auf 150 GWh bis 2030 erhöht werden. Zudem sollen ein Forschungszentrum erweitert und zuletzt soll auch der Bau einer Gigafactory für das Recycling von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien erreicht werden.
Kooperationen in Bezug auf Autobauer hat Northvolt bisher vor allem mit Volkswagen und auch BMW. Neben der Anlage in Schweden wird es in Form von „Northvolt Zwei“ eine weitere Produktionsanlage für Lithium-Ionen-Batterien künftig auch in Salzgitter geben. Diese Anlage wird von Northvolt und VW gemeinschaftlich betrieben werden.
