Die Feststoffbatterie ist aktuell einer der vielversprechendsten Ansätze, um eine erhebliche Entwicklung im Bereich der Batterietechnik für mehr Leistung und längere Reichweiten zu erzielen. BMW und Ford Partner Solid Power, hat nun bereits seit einiger Zeit an einer Festkörperbatterietechnik gearbeitet. Solid Power sieht sich in der Lage erste Feststoffbatterien ab dem nächsten Jahr zu produzieren, jedoch noch nicht für den Automotivebereich.

Ab dem Jahr 2026/27 sieht sich Solid Power in der Lage Feststoffbatterien auch für Fahrzeuge zu produzieren. Immer noch ist vor allem die Ladezyklenbeständigkeit eins der Hauptprobleme der Feststoffbatterietechnik. Dadurch, dass Solid Power, wie Geschäftsführer Doug Campbell in einem Interview mit insideevs berichtete, vollkommen feste Elektrolyten, also nicht wie z.B. Gels verwendet, kommt es durch die Ausdehnung beim Laden und Entladen immer wieder zu rissen im Elektrolyten. Hierdurch altern die Zellen meist sehr schnell. Langfristig sucht das Unternehmen also insbesondere nach einer Technologie, die den Feststoffbatterien das Atmen ermöglicht, ohne das dadurch der Aufbau der Zellchemie leidet. Solid Power nutzt, neben einer speziellen Zellchemie, aktuell vor allem mechanischen Druck und im definierten Maße Nachgiebigkeit beim Betrieb der Zellen und erreicht so heute bereits Zyklenbeständigkeiten, die mit automobilen Lithium-Ionen-Batterien vergleichbar sind.

Solid Power rechnet weiter damit, dass die Feststoffbatterien künftig genauso langlebig wie aktuelle Batterien sein werden, darüber hinaus aber auch Temperaturstabil sind. In Bezug auf das Produktportfolio will sich das Unternehmen sowohl auf die Herstellung von Feststoffbatterien als auch auf die dazugehörige Produktion von Elektrolyten fokussieren und denkt ebenso über die Lizenzierung von Herstellungsverfahren nach.
