Die wirtschaftliche Tragweite der Pandemie des neuartigen Corona-Virus muss sich noch zeigen. Erste Abschätzungen zeigen aber Belastungen bislang ungekannten Ausmaßes. In China, wo der Peak der Ausbreitung überschritten scheint, zeigt sich das Ausmaß besonders. Hier wird von einer großen Verlangsamung des Wirtschaftswachstums erwartet. Als wichtiges Produktionsland übertragt sich dieser Effekt auf nahezu alle Länder weltweit. Viele der Produktionsstätten sind geschlossen oder laufen mit reduzierter Kapazität. Als wichtiger Produzent von Batteriezellen zeigen sich hier die Auswirkungen nochmals verstärkt. Die größten Produzenten CATL und BYD versuchen den Produktionsausfall in China durch verstärkte Produktion in anderen Ländern auszugleichen. Die Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung der Virusausbreitung beeinflussen direkt die Lieferketten. Diverse Quellen gehen von Verlusten von rund 26GWh für 2020 aus. Unbestätigten Quellen zufolge wurde der Bedarf von Tesla wurde im Monat Februar der gesamte Zellbedarf durch LG Chem gedeckt. Gleichzeitig wurde entsprechende Vorschriften für ausländische Zellen durch die chinesische Regierung gelockert.

Die Zellproduzenten in China wiesen darauf hin, dass eine baldige Rückkehr zur normalen Produktion unbedingt notwendig sei, um die Lieferketten wieder zu stabilisieren. Zeitlichen Spielraum habe man nur noch bis Ende Mai, so der CEO von Guoxuan High Tech. Guoxuan fokussiert sich auf die LFP-Technologie und vermeidet so die begrenzten Rohstoffe Kobalt und Nickel. Die Firma ist momentan der drittgrößte Zellproduzent in China. Insgesamt erwartet der Dienstleister Bloomberg NEF nun ein reduziertes Wachstum des Bedarfs von 6-15%, verglichen mit den vorher erwarteten 19%. Im Dezember 2019 waren von insgesamt 112 geplanten Batteriefabriken rund 75% in China verortet bei einer Gesamtkapazität von 546 GWh.
