Nachdem es immer wieder Berichte gab, dass Tesla an der Herstellung eigener Batteriezellen arbeiten würde, werden diese Gerüchte nun weiter bestätigt.
Damit arbeitet Tesla aller Voraussicht nach an einer Alternative zu den aktuell und seit Jahren von Panasonic zugelieferten Batteriezellen. Aktuellster Insiderbericht hierzu ist der Bau einer Pilotproduktionslinie für Batteriezellen in Fremont unter dem Projektnamen „Roadrunner“. Hier soll Tesla für die Massenproduktion eigener Batteriezellen grundlegende Testzyklen durchführen, um damit eine neuartige Batteriezelle zu produzieren, die deutlich energiedichter und günstiger als die bisherige von Panasonic ist. Konkret soll die neue Batteriezelle unter 100 Dollar pro kWh kosten. Erste Prototypen der neuartigen Eigenproduktion soll Tesla inzwischen in einer Kleinstserie bereits fertiggestellt haben.
Tesla ist hiermit Vorreiter in einem entstehenden Trend der eigenständigen Verwaltung der Zellproduktion des Endanwenders. Ebenso wie Tesla plant unter anderem VW mit dem Partner Northvolt eine eigenständige Zellproduktion an Standorten Salzgitter. Auch PSA mit Tochter Opel plant mit dem Partner Saft eine eigene Batteriezellproduktion an den Standorten Douvrin und Kaiserlautern.
