Chinesischen Quellen zufolge plant Tesla eine neue Antriebsstrangkonfiguration auf dem eigenen „Battery Day“ im April zu enthüllen. Diese soll aus einem Batteriesystem aus Trockenzellen und Superkondensatoren bestellen und hätte das Potential die Energiedichte sowie Ladegeschwindigkeit zu steigern.

Das Knowhow für die neuen Batteriezellen, sowie die Superkondensatoren, sollen vom Entwickler Maxwell Technologies stammen, welcher 2019 von Tesla übernommen wurde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt ließ Tesla bereits verlauten, dass die Trockenbatterie-Elektrodentechnologie, welche Maxwell für die Superkondensatoren verwendet, „eine bahnbrechende Technologie für Lithium Ion Batterien sein könnte (…) insbesondere auf dem Markt für Elektrofahrzeuge.“

Durch die kobaltfreien Batterien kann die Energiedichte auf Zellebene von aktuelle rund 240 Wh/kg auf mehr als 300 Wh/kg erhöhen. Durch weitere Entwicklung sollen laut Experten sogar 500 Wh/kg langfristig möglich sein. Neben der höheren Energiedichte bietet die Technologie ebenfalls Vorteile bei der Sicherheit und den Kosten.

Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob die neue Technologie bereits für die Großserienfertigung ausreichend entwickelt ist und wie die genaue chemische Zusammensetzung der neuen Batterien aussieht. Tesla hat sich zu diesem Thema bisher nicht geäußert.
