Der IT-Spezialist IBM platziert sich mit einem innovativen Ansatz im Themengebiet der nachhaltigen Batteriespeichertechnik. Im Rahmen eines neuartigem Technologieansatzes ist es dem IBM Research Battery Lab gelungen eine Batteriezelle zu bauen, die zum einem nicht das hohe Brandrisiko aktueller Lithium-Ionen-Batterie beherbergt und zum anderen mit Grundmaterialen auskommt, welche aus Meerwasser gewonnen werden können

Die sich noch im Laborstadium befindende vorgestellte Batterie wurde in einer gemeinschaftlichen Entwicklung von IBM und den Entwicklungspartnern Daimler, Central Glass (Elektrolyt) und dem Batteriehersteller Sidus erarbeitet und basiert weiterhin auf dem Lithium-Ionen-Prinzip. Neuartig ist, dass die Forscher es schafften ohne Zusätze von bisher zwingend benötigten Schwermetallen auszukommen und diese durch drei unter Geheimhaltung stehende und aus Meerwasser gewonnene Stoffe zu ersetzen.  

Schwermetalle in Lithium-Ionen-Batterie wie Kobalt, werden oft in umweltbelastenden Prozessen gewonnenderen Abbaugebiet zudem oftmals in Konfliktregionen wie dem Kongo liegenDarüber hinaus zeichnen sich immer wieder Probleme dahingehend ab, den stetig wachsenden Marktbedarf mit den derzeitig zum Teil noch geringen Abbaumengen zu beliefernHier warnte Mitte 2018 die Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe insbesondere vor einer Verknappung von Kobalt.  

Sollte es IBM schaffen, den noch relativ geheimnisumwobenen Prozess zur Herstellung der Batterie auch in einem industriellen Maßstab zu etablieren, so besteht durchaus Erfolgspotential für die Technologie. Denn obwohl sich der Preis pro Tonne Kobalt nach einem Peak von 95.000 USD pro Tonne auf heute ca. 29.000 UDS korrigiert hat, wird langfristig eine Alternative zu den heute gängigen Schwermetallen aus ökologischer und ökonomischer Sicht in der E-Mobilität unumgänglich werden.
