Volvo Cars, die dem chinesischen Unternehmen Geely gehören, hat erste Autos mit recyceltem Kobalt produziert, dessen Lieferkette durch eine Blockchain abgebildet wird. Das Unternehmen beteiligt sich an einem Projekt zur Überwachung von Kobalt aus der Demokratischen Republik Kongo. Kobalt wird meist aus Ländern bezogen, die Kinderarbeit betreiben und daher als kritisch angesehen werden. Da gerade Elektrofahrzeuge einen erhöhten Kobaltbedarf haben, geraten Automobilhersteller unter Druck, bestehende Missstände zu bekämpfen oder alternative Kobaltquellen zu erschließen.
Volvo untersuchte, ob Lieferketten mithilfe einer Blockchain, die zunächst für Kryptowährungen benutzt wird, verantwortungsvoller gestaltet werden können. Nach Aussagen von Volvo wurden bereits erste Blockchains für recyceltes Kobalt erstellt. Im Fokus stand dabei eine Recyclinganlage in China, die ein Volvo-Werk in Zhejiang beliefert. Das Ziel sei vollständige Transparenz und Rückverfolgbarkeit. Die Entwicklung erfolgte mithilfe des britischen Blockchain-Spezialisten Circulor auf Basis der Technologie des US-Unternehmens Oracle. Die resultierende Blockchain soll noch in diesem Jahr flächendeckend eingeführt werden. Die Batteriezellen werden von dem chinesischen Unternehmen Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) hergestellt.
Volvo hat sich nach eigenen Angaben neben Mitstreiter Ford, IBM, LG Chem und Huayou Cobalt einem Projekt der RCS Global angeschlossen. Hier zeigte man sich erfreut, dass das Interesse an der Herkunft der Rohstoffe steigt. Zwei Drittel des weltweit abgebauten Kobalts stammen aus dem Kongo, wo die Regierungsverhältnisse kompliziert sind. Kobalterzeuger Glencore hatte im vergangenen Jahr verstärkt mit Problemen wie Überfällen zu kämpfen. Eine Blockchain allein kann das Problem nach Aussagen von Volvo aber nicht lösen. Aber sie bietet die Möglichkeit, in jeder Phase die Verantwortlichkeit zu verbessern und Streitigkeiten zu vermeiden. Doug Johnson-Poensgen, CEO von Circulor sagte, dass nicht die Sorgfaltspflicht ersetzt werde, sondern aufgezeigt werde wo Verbesserungspotential bestehe und Standards helfen könne. Durch die Blockchain können Zertifizierungsprozesse von bspw. Olivenöl sowie Kostensenkung durch eine Rationalisierung des grenzüberschreitenden Zahlungsverkehrs umgesetzt werden. IBM hat weiterführend an der Verfolgung von Lieferketten von Lebensmittel gearbeitet.
