Die Freude auf der einen Seite, großes Ärgernis auf der anderen Seite. Die Standortentscheidung für die Forschungsfertigung Batteriezelle hat für großen Diskussionsstoff auf Landes- und Bundesebene gesorgt.

Die nicht zum Zuge gekommen Bundesländer haben sich unmittelbar an Kanzlerin Angela Merkel gewandt und die Begründung für den Standortentscheid durch Bundesministerin Karliczek in Frage gestellt. Die Ministerpräsidenten Stephan Weil (Niedersachsen), Markus Söder (Bayern) sowie Winfried Kretschmann (Baden-Würtemberg) sehen die als Begründung für den Entscheid angegeben Vorteile des Münsterlandes als eigentliche Nachteile. Ihr Wettbewerbsvorschlag würde durch die Nutzung bestehender Infrastruktur deutlich schneller zu besseren Ergebnissen führen und Deutschland endlich zur Aufholjagd im Bereich der Batterietechnik befähigen. Eine Gutachten der in Zukunft leitenden Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft falle ebenfalls pro Konsortium Ulm, Augsburg und Salzgitter aus. Darüber hinaus wird der Vorwurf geäußert, dass die Nahe zu Karliczeks Wahlkreis eine Rolle gespielt haben könnte und somit mehr politisches Kalkül denn echte Forschungsförderung im Vordergrund stand. Niedersachsens Ministerpräsident spricht von einer vertanen Chance, den Osten weiter zu fördern.

NRW-Ministerpräsident Armin Laschet wies die Argumente seiner Amtskollegen scharf  zurück.

Bundesministerin Karliczek hat sich im Rahmen der starken Kritik bezüglich der Standortentscheidung nach Berichten von Handelsblatt und WiWo dazu bekannt, dass die weiteren bekannten Forschungsstandorte in Deutschland ebenfalls umfangreiche Hilfe bekommen sollen. Es müsse ein stimmiges Gesamtkonzept vorgelegt werden, um Deutschland den internationalen Anschluss und eine Spitzenpositionen zu ermöglichen.
