CustomCells Opens Battery Headquarters

German battery pioneer CustomCells has opened its new company headquarters in Itzehoe. The research center is intended to drive forward the global energy and mobility transition with tailor-made battery cells. The location on the so-called Energy Coast in Schleswig-Holstein is set to become a global reference for premium battery cell technology.

“Massively increase patent applications track record”

“We want to invest in Germany and massively increase our track record of patent applications,” said CustomCells CEO Dr. Dirk Abendroth at the opening with representatives from politics and business in attendance. There were already double-digit figures in 2023. CustomCells was founded in 2012 as a spin-off company of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.

Ten times greater energy and power density

The company’s new headquarters offers 10,000 square meters of flexible working concepts. However, the investments are not yet complete: An extruder for battery production has been ordered, and further expansion stages are planned. “With state-of-the-art battery cell technology, we have the key to an opportunity of the century,” said Abendroth, “but we won’t succeed without political support.” CustomCells is working on innovative battery cells using the booster process to increase energy and power density by more than ten times compared to conventional batteries.
