South Koreaʼs Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution (LGES) have opened the first electric vehicle (EV) battery cell production plant in Indonesia. The plant is designed to have an annual capacity of ten gigawatt-hours. It is part of the companiesʼ commitment to invest up to 9.8 billion US Dollars in Indonesia to establish an electric car supply chain there.
Two billion dollars for factory expansion
The partners first announced the project at the West Java province site in 2021. At the time, the investment in the battery plant was said to be 1.1 billion dollars. According to Reuters, Hyundai and LGES are now planning an expansion phase. With a further investment of two billion dollars, the factoryʼs capacity is to be increased by another 20 gigawatt-hours.
Batteries for Hyundai cars
The battery factory is integrated into a site that also houses the production of Hyundai brand vehicles. The company has plans for an annual production of 50,000 units of the Kona Electric SUV there. The vehicles are to be equipped with the locally produced battery cells.
