Der japanische Automobilhersteller Toyota hat angekündigt, umgerechnet rund 5,6 Milliarden US-Dollar in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Japan zu investieren, um die Produktion von Batteriezellen für Elektroautos zu erhöhen. Obwohl Toyota mit der Vorstellung des Prius im Jahr 1997 früh in den Markt der Batteriehybrid-Fahrzeuge eingestiegen war, wird dem Unternehmen im Bereich der reinen Elektrofahrzeuge ein Rückstand im Vergleich mit Branchenführern nachgesagt.
2,33 Milliarden Dollar für North Carolina
Von den insgesamt investierten 730 Milliarden Yen sollen 400 Milliarden Yen in das Himeji-Werk der Prime Planet Energy & Solutions Co. fließen, einem Joint Venture zwischen Toyota und Panasonic, sowie in andere Standorte von Toyota in Japan. In den USA werden Unternehmensangaben zufolge 325 Milliarden Yen investiert, um Pläne für eine eigene Batterieproduktion im Bundesstaat North Carolina umzusetzen. Dieses Vorhaben hatte der Konzern im vergangenen Jahr angekündigt. Damals wurde mit einem Investment von knapp 1,3 Milliarden US-Dollar in das Werk gerechnet.
