Das belgische Unternehmen Umicore plant eine Anlage zur Produktion von Kathodenmaterialien und deren Vormaterialien im kanadischen Ontario. Der Batteriematerialien-Hersteller will im Jahr 2023 mit dem Bau beginnen und den Betrieb Ende 2025 aufnehmen. Ziel sei es, bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts eine jährliche Produktionskapazität zu erreichen, mit der etwa eine Million Elektrofahrzeuge betrieben werden können.
Stärkung der nationalen Wertschöpfungskette
Die geplante Anlage kombiniert die Herstellung von Kathoden- und Vormaterialien in großem industriellen Maßstab und wäre damit die erste ihrer Art in Nordamerika. Sie vervollständigt damit das fehlende Glied in der kanadischen Wertschöpfungskette für Batterien, von natürlichen Ressourcen ausgehend bis hin zur Elektromobilität. Umicore steht derzeit in Verhandlung mit potenziellen Kunden über Produktionsaufträge in Nordamerika.
Kanadische Regierung unterstützt Vorhaben
Umicore und die kanadische Regierung haben dazu eine Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet, um den Förderantrag für das Projekt im Rahmen des kanadischen Programms „Strategic Innovation Fund“ zu finalisieren. Diese Absichtserklärung folgt auf eine vor kurzem unterzeichnete Vereinbarung mit der Gemeinde Loyalist Township zur Sicherung eines Grundstücks von etwa 140 Hektar in Loyalist, Ontario. Der Standort befindet sich im Zentrum des kanadischen Automobil-Ökosystems und bietet entscheidende Vorteile – etwa den Zugang zu hochqualifizierten Arbeitskräften, wichtiger Infrastruktur und erneuerbarer Energie, die das neue Werk ab Produktionsbeginn zu 100 Prozent nutzen will. Umicore will eigenen Anganben zufolge indes auch Möglichkeiten für die Metallraffination und das Batterie-Recycling in Nordamerika erkunden.
