Der deutsche Chemiekonzern Henkel hat neuartige Beschichtungen für Akku-Packs von Elektrofahrzeugen präsentiert. Die Innovation soll im Falle eines thermischen Durchgehens den Prozess verlangsamen und dadurch die Insassen schützen. Dabei sollen die Beschichtungen als feuerfeste Barriere fungieren, die die stark exotherme Reaktion eines „Thermal Runaways“ vom Rest des Fahrzeugs trennt.
Zwei verschiedene Varianten
Ziel der Produkte sei es indes nicht, den Vorgang vollständig zu stoppen, sondern die Auswirkungen eines solchen Ereignisses zu minimieren. Die Ausbreitung des Feuers werde verlangsamt, um den Insassen des Fahrzeugs mehr Zeit zur sicheren Evakuierung zu geben, betont Stephan Hoefer, Marktstrategieleiter für E-Mobilität bei Henkel. In diesem Zusammenhang stellte der Konzern zwei verschiedene Produkte vor: „Loctite EA 9400“ stellt eine geschäumte Zweikomponenten-Beschichtung auf Epoxibasis dar, während „Loctite FPC 5060“ wasserbasiert und einkomponentig ist. Beide sollen sich über herkömmliche Beschichtungsanlagen auftragen lassen und bei Raumtemperatur aushärten.
LG entwickelt extrem flammsicheren Kunststoff
Parallel zu Henkel arbeitet auch der Konzern LG Chem an der Eindämmung des thermischen Durchgehens von Lithium-Ionen-Zellen. Das südkoreanisches Chemie-Unternehmen setzt jedoch auf einen Kunststoff, der etwa als Deckel des Batteriepacks verbaut werden könnte. Den internen Testergebnissen von LG Chem zufolge kann das Material die Ausbreitung von Flammen, die durch einen „Thermal Runaway“ verursacht werden, mehr als 400 Sekunden lang bei 1.000 Grad Celsius blockieren. Dies sei 45-mal besser als bei herkömmlichen flammhemmenden Kunststoffen. Der Konzern plant bereits für das Jahr 2023 mit einer Serienfertigung.
