Der chinesisch-japanische Batteriezellhersteller Envision AESC plant den Bau einer Gigafactory in Bowling Green im US-Bundesstaat Kentucky. Die Produktion soll Batteriezellen und Module umfassen und eine Jahreskapazität von mindestens 30 Gigawattstunden aufweisen. Laut Angaben des Konzerns existiert eine Option für die Erweiterung auf 40 Gigawattstunden. Die Kosten für die Lithium-Ionen-Batteriefabrik sollen zwei Milliarden US-Dollar betragen. Der Start der Produktion ist auf 2025 datiert.

Kunden überall auf der Welt?

Die neue Zellfertigung in Kentucky soll die „Next generation battery technology“ für eine Vielzahl globaler Automobilhersteller bieten. Als Kunden für die Batteriezellen werden derzeit Mercedes-Benz und möglicherweise Honda angenommen. Envision AESC verfügt bereits über eine Zellfertigung in Tennessee, die Nissan beliefert.

Auch Hyundai plant neues Werk in USA

Auch Hyundai hat in einem Interview zuletzt eine Zellfertigung in den USA angekündigt. Laut „Automotive News“ zählt das neue Werk zu den 7,4 Milliarden Dollar schweren Investitionsplänen des Autobauers in den USA. Sie sollen die Produktion von Elektrofahrzeugen im Allgemeinen sowie die Modernisierung von Fabriken und die künftige Entwicklung von Technologien im Zusammenhang mit intelligenter Mobilität umfassen. Hyundai-COO Jose Muñoz zufolge werde das Unternehmen noch im Verlauf des Jahres 2022 einen Standort für die kommende Elektrofahrzeug- und Batteriefabrik auswählen.
